If your multimedia audio controller is not working properly, you may not be able to use your speakers, hear any sounds or play computer games that require sounds. Sometimes the controller driver gets corrupted and needs to be reinstalled, while other times the driver may have a conflict with something on your system and a driver update fixes the problem.
Step 1
Navigate to your sound card or motherboard audio device manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your device. Save this file in an easy to remember area, such as 'My Documents.'
Step 2
Go to 'Start' and 'Control Panel.' Click 'System' to bring up 'System Properties.' Click the 'Hardware' tab and hit the 'Device Manager' option.
Step 3
Click the plus sign next to 'Sound, video and game controllers.' Right-click the listing for your multimedia audio controller, which should be named after your sound card or motherboard audio device. Choose 'Uninstall.'
Double-click the driver installation you downloaded in Step 1. Accept the manufacturer's end user license agreement and click 'Next' until the driver has installed. Restart your computer. A series of 'New Hardware Found' balloons will pop up on your system tray and Windows will reinstall your multimedia audio controller.

Tip
- If you don't want to download the driver from the manufacturer, you can right-click your multimedia audio controller, choose 'Properties' and go to the 'Driver' tab. Click 'Update Driver.' Windows may not be able to download the proper driver, however, which is why you want to try to get the driver from the manufacturer first.
